How do I create Double Exposures?

When I was first introduced to Double Exposure photography my first reaction was “Double exposure! I’m still trying to get a normal picture looking good. Don’t start making me learn complicated, photo editing stuff just yet”.”

It turned out however, that despite double exposure sounding a little daunting, it’s actually quite easy.
This is one of those ‘easy to learn, difficult to master’ techniques.
