I've been using DVDs to distribute my films ever since they became a cheaper and faster alternative to VHS tapes (ask your parents).
It was an interesting transition. Not every home had a DVD player and clients liked their video tapes and wanted to keep growing their collection.
Despite that, there were many benefits to changing. By changing to DVDs I was able to save a huge amount of time and money which I was then able to put back into my workshops.
It seems like we are once again in a time of changing technologies.
We are being told more and more by students that they don't have access to a DVD player as streaming has become the norm in our client's households.
With this in mind, as of 2020 Silverbox has made the decision to stop using DVDs to distribute our films.
So how will we be able to watch our movies now?
This has been something we knew was coming for a long time, however, knowing what to do about it has always been the big question.
After lots of research and testing I've finally found a solution that is able to provide a high quality movie, as quickly as possible but most importantly is safe for parents and students to use.
As of January 2020 we will be sending you're finished movies as Digital Downloads via your registered email address.
This will be fantastic as it will:
However, with any change like this there are always questions and I've tried my best to answer some of them below.
If you have any other questions not covered in this article please comment on the blog post, send me an email or call me on our contact details.
Even more film-making time than before
In the past we have always had to stop students from making films on the second to last session of any After School Club or Holiday School.
The reason for this has always been to give us time to tidy up, finish and export the students films so that they can be put on a DVD which would then be given to all the students on the final session.
If they don't get their movies in the final session they could be waiting several weeks to get their DVDs in the post due to school holiday breaks.
Now with our downloaded movies we can keep filming all the way up the final session as anything created can be emailed over to parents even as soon as the club is over.
More Versatile Movies
Watch on Smart TVs, Laptops, Tablets, Phones
Fixing Whoopsies (Not that we ever make them of course!)
There have been occasions when DVDs have been sent out and a film has been missed off of the disc or there is a name misspelt in the credits.
We do everything we can to try and make sure this doesn't happen but we are often managing 120+ films over the course of any single term and one will sometimes manage to slip through the net.
When this happens we always issue a new DVD with the correction on it but this does mean the students have to wait until we see them again before they can get their copy.
With the new download system, as soon as we are aware of the problem we will be able to make sure that the movie is sent straight over to you with no need to wait until we see you next.
Only accessible via your email
All the films will only be sent to your registered email address.
This means we can ensure the movies are only being sent to the customers that have applied for the clubs and not anyone that shouldn't be receiving them.
This will mean ensuring your most up to date email address is supplied to us throughout the term.
Every download will be password protected.
Each student will be provided with a password that will be given to them directly by the workshop manager. This will be unique to each school and will be changed each term.
Limited Download Time
Each download will only be available for a limited time.
In order to ensure that the movies do not remain online for any longer than necessary we have chosen a server that will destroy the files after they have been downloaded or after a chosen duration of time.
This will mean you will need to download your movies within the given timeframe.
The duration will be 2 weeks but this may change as we begin to roll out the new service.
We will be ensuring the anonymity of the students by no longer including credits or titles that include the names of the students or the school that they attend.
We endeavour to not include the names of the schools we work in, the school logos and context clues as to which school we are working in but this is not always entirely possible.
We will be including copyright notices on the movies so that parents and students are aware that these movies are not permitted to be uploaded to third party websites without the express permission of Silverbox.
I hope this has helped to explain why we are making the move from DVDs to Digital Downloads.
